1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible

The Volkswagen Beetle, officially the Volkswagen Type 1, is a small car produced by the German company Volkswagen from 1938 to 2003. It is one of the most iconic cars in automotive history, recognized for its distinctive shape. Its production period of 65 years is the longest of any single generation of automobile, and its total production of over 21.5 million is the most of any car of a single platform. Early in 1972, sales of the Volkswagen Beetle topped 15,000,000, surpassing those of the Ford 'Model T', to earn the bug the title of "world's most popular car."
 
Having been delivered new in Portland, Oregon, this Super Beetle has spent time in California and more recently Illinois, where it was purchased by the current owner in 2020. The car is finished in Marina Blue with a white convertible top over a white and black interior and is powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. The Volkswagen Classic Parts certificate lists a manufacturing date of November 11, 1971, as well as the original colors.
The car was reportedly refurbished and repainted in its original Marina Blue (L54D) during previous ownership. Chrome 15″ wheels wear VW hubcaps and Nexen tires. The braking system is said to have been rebuilt and the emergency brake cable replaced in 2019. The steering box was also reportedly adjusted.  Other work included the installation of later-model taillights and rear fenders along with a replacement white convertible top and glass rear window. The aftermarket four-spoke steering wheel frames a combination gauge including a 100-mph speedometer, a fuel-level gauge, and a five-digit odometer , true mileage is unknown.
