1971 Lotus Europa EV
The Europa used a lightweight, folded & welded "minimalist" boxed-steel backbone chassis with a fibreglass moulded body, a combination that was first used by Lotus founder Colin Chapman in the Lotus Elan launched in 1962. Earliest versions of the Europa had the body fully bonded to the chassis for maximum structural stiffness, however this was soon changed to a bolted-on body to allow normal chassis and body repairs to be made. Unlike the Elan, the Europa had no front-mounted engine or gearbox to accommodate, and so the Europa's main chassis member ran straight forward to intersect a large box-section cross-beam running across the car between the front suspension points. At the rear, the chassis split into a "U" shape behind the cabin to accommodate the combined engine, transmission and final-drive components, and to support the rear suspension.
And this Europa happens to be converted to ELECTRIC!
A complete frame up restoration was performed on the Lotus Europa Series 2 before converting it to an EV. The car has an Impulse 9 motor with a Curtis 1231C-8601 Controller It also has a DC to DC converter (high voltage to 12V the handle all the low voltage stuff, like the lights). Also has a Zivan ng3 battery charger. The goal of the restoration was to retain as much of the orginal Europa as possible. A new wood dash was installed using the original tach and speedo while replacing smaller gauges with updated smaller gauges but we do have the originals. Even the original Renault 4 speed transmission was retains and is fully functional. The car was used by the owners wife for nearly 5 years before replacing with with a Tesla. The lead batteries are currently in need of replacement so Northshore Sportscars will be offering the option of replacing these in kind or upgrading to lithium batteries which would render the vehicle much lighter and provide longer driving ranges. We would also be able to return this Europa to a gas powered example using an original Renault motor or a alternate modern powerplant. Please contact us for more details!
