1974 Lotus Europa Special
The Europa concept is believed to have originated during 1963 with drawings done by Ron Hickman, then director of Lotus Engineering, for Lotus' bid for the Ford GT40 racing car project. Lotus planned the Europa to be a volume produced, two seater mid-engined sports coupe built to reasonable cost, quite an ambitious goal for the time. Like all Lotus vehicles of the era, the Europa was designed and built following Chapman's oft-stated philosophy of automotive design: "Simplify, then add lightness". To this end, a number of ingenious design approaches were made by Lotus to allow it to economically overcome the many challenges presented by the novel mid-engined arrangement. Production of the original Lotus Europa ceased in 1975, with a total of 9,230 cars of all models having been built of which 3130 were badged "Specials".
Recently out of long term ownership from a wealthy owners estate, this Lotus Europa was in dry storage for . a few years after the owner fell ill. Before it was stored some repairs had been performed including rebuilding the original numbers matching motor, replacing shock absorbers, and refinishing the original wheels. The motor turns over but will need some repairs before running is possible. The body is sound with no cracking and doors close properly without dropping. The black paint has wear and blemishes such that it should be repainted. The interior is in very good condition with no tears or rips on the seats. The 1600cc twin cam motor has the big valve head and very RARE twin Weber car setup that were not available in the US. The transmission is the desirable 5 speed manual. It also has the original jack with handle and shop repair manual. The underside does not have corrosion and is in good original condition. This low mileage Lotus Europa is definitely a very desirable restoration candidate as it could be a John Player Special as well.
