1970 Triumph GT6 MK 2

1970 Triumph GT6 MK 2

The Triumph GT6 is a 6-cylinder sports coupé built by Standard-Triumph from 1966 to 1973. In 1963, Giovanni Michelotti was commissioned by Triumph to design a GT version of their recently introduced Spitfire 4. To overcome the lack of performance inherent in the heavier body style the Spitfire's 4-cylinder engine was replaced with the more powerful 2.0 liter Triumph inline 6. Contemporary Triumph marketing advertised the GT6 as being developed from the "race winning Le Mans Spitfires." The 1969 model year, with the introduction of the GT6 Mk II, branded in North America as the GT6+. The rear suspension was significantly re-engineered using reversed lower wishbones and Rotoflex driveshaft couplings, taming the handling and turning the Triumph into an MGB beater. Indeed, the Triumph GT6 has long been called “the poor man’s E-type,” and from the beginning it was competitively priced as such to compete with the likes of the MGB GT. But even though the GT6 is rarer, quicker, prettier, has two more cylinders, and makes a better sound than the MG.

The previous owner purchased this Laurel green car in 1998, over 30 years ago. All of the floor pans and body panels are solid originals on this never damaged survivor GT6. The engine, transmission, and overdrive were rebuilt in 2009 by Triumph specialists The Roadster Factory. The distributor was rebuilt at Advanced Distributors in MN in 2018. Carbs were redone in 2016, and gear reduction starter was new in 2020. Brake master cylinder was new in 2001 as were rear wheel brake cylinders and rubber brake lines. Front disc calipers were restored at White Post Restorations in VA in 2001. The brakes and clutch are filled with DOT 5 silicone fluid.  The wood dash and carpet were also replaced. Wire wheels and tires were new in 2020, purchased from Hendrix Wire Wheels in North Carolina. Exhaust system was also new in 2020. It comes with a factory service manual, tire iron, and original jack. This is truly a survivor car that  is very, very nice condition.
